Oral Surgery
For a number of reasons you and your doctor may decide a tooth extraction is necessary. In this case the doctor would extract the affected tooth and its root. This is only done after replacement options are discussed.
Some teeth are so affected by decay that the doctor will not be able to restore them with a filling or a crown. Similarly, if a tooth breaks or cracks and there is root involvement it may be necessary to pull the tooth. At the time of extraction the doctor will numb the area with local anesthetic. This anesthetic will prevent you from feeling any pain. An extraction would not be performed without discussing any and all replacement options. Wisdom teeth removal is also a form of oral surgery performed when there is not enough room for these teeth to grow in or they begin to cause pain and discomfort.
